Belmont University
The Department of Art is part of Belmont’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and is located in the 40,000-square-foot Leu Center for the Visual Arts. This facility combines the latest technology with traditional studio space, including two Macintosh graphics labs and a student gallery. There are large studios specifically for drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and ceramics as well as a 118-seat audiovisual room for slide lectures and other multimedia presentations. In addition, the Leu Art Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library provides more than 1,000 square feet of exhibit space for traveling exhibits, regional art exhibitions, and regional and national artists.
Faculty Faculty members are practicing artists and designers who exhibit both regionally and nationally.
Exhibition Opportunities Each year, the Department of Art exhibits student work in a large art show. In addition, seniors exhibit their work during their last semester of study.
Special Programs International residencies in art are offered in France, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Russia, and in Italy at the Lorenzo de Medici Art Institute of Florence. Course work in Florence may include photography, painting and drawing, textiles, fashion design, oil and fresco painting restoration, graphics, sculpture, jewelry, and art history. Internship programs allow students to gain valuable, practical work experience. In addition, the Belmont University Career Office offers assistance with career planning.
Application ProceduresDeadline--freshmen and transfers: continuous. Required: essay, high school transcript, college transcript(s) for transfer students, minimum 2.0 high school GPA, letter of recommendation, portfolio, SAT or ACT test scores. Recommended: interview. Auditions held 1 time. Portfolio reviews held by arrangement on campus; the submission of slides may be substituted for portfolios whenever needed (DVD preferred).
